Award process

One of the cons of juried exhibitions is the fact that adjudicators’ choices are subjective. Jurors have limitations: they don’t know the background and intention of the artists, and it is hard to compare artworks that are sometimes vastly different. The chosen artworks are always a reflection of the adjudicators. For the artists, entering a juried exhibition can be an emotional rollercoaster.

In order to make the selection process more rewarding and positive for everyone involved, the following idea of broader encouragement was created. The adjudicators will look at the selected artworks in the gallery and choose 10 artworks to appear on a shortlist. Finally, a random draw will determine which of the shortlisted artworks will receive the Kootenay Art Prize. Furthermore, all artworks that didn't make the shortlist will have a chance to win the Inspiration Award which will also be chosen by draw.

INTRODUCING THE ADJUDICATORS

Kimberley-based oil painter, teacher, mentor, and writer CAPRICE HOGG
Kimberley-based oil painter, teacher, mentor, and writer CAPRICE HOGG

Caprice Hogg began her artistic journey in 1994 and has since dedicated her life to painting and teaching art across Canada. In 2003, she opened Caprice Fine Art & Co Studio Gallery in Kimberley, British Columbia, nestled in the inspiring Rocky Mountains. Her original oil paintings are featured in private and corporate collections worldwide, reflecting her deep connection with art collectors.

Teaching was a natural extension of her passion for art, and she now shares the techniques passed down from her mentors, inspired by greats like Michelangelo, the Group of Seven, and Emily Carr. Caprice has taught diverse groups, including children, retirees, and disadvantaged youth, fostering creativity and connection through her gentle mentorship.

As a female entrepreneur with a disability, Caprice has embraced the challenges of running a rural BC business, channeling her experiences into captivating stories shared through her Substack newsletter. She also contributes as a book reviewer for Cloud Lake Literary and mentors emerging artists globally through the Mastrius Artist Mentorship Community.

Creston-based ceramic artist, teacher, and mentor DAVID BARNES

David’s life has been shaped by a deep connection to art, teaching, and creativity. From founding his first ceramics business, Higham Pottery, in 1977 to crafting the Millennium sculpture Hands and Molecules, his journey has been one of versatility and passion. Teaching has been central to his career, including his role as Head of Ceramics at South Kent College, where he shared his expertise and inspired a new generation of artists.

Meeting his wife, Glynis Martyn, brought a new dimension to his life, blending equestrian pursuits with his artistic endeavors. Together, they relocated across borders—from Sandwich, Kent, to France, and eventually Black Diamond, Alberta—each move enriching their creative and professional ventures. In Alberta, David expanded his artistic focus, delving into the complexities of glazes and materials, teaching ceramics workshops, and exhibiting in galleries.

His work reflects a lifelong dedication to innovation and artistic growth, underscoring his enduring commitment to creative expression and mentorship.

Kimberley-based Gallery Owner IRMA DE VISSER

"I've consistently expressed my creative voice in various ways throughout my life, yet it was my move from The Netherlands to Canada in 2013 that immersed me in the world of fine art."

"Shortly after settling in Kimberley, BC, I took on the role of administrative assistant at Kimberley Arts at Centre 64, our town's vibrant arts and cultural hub. It was within these walls that I discovered a passion for the arts, particularly in supporting artists and inspiring and growing the local art community. Over the years, this passion has flourished, pushing me to establish Art Gallery Kimberley in the heart of Kimberley's Platzl, when the opportunity arose in 2021."

"More recently, I was introduced to the wonderful world of ceramics and played a role in the inception of the Kimberley Clay Collective. I am excited to see where this road will take me. It's been an honour to have been part of the team of adjudicators for several local open art exhibitions and community grant programs in the last few years, such an inspiring and informative experience."
