Meet Local Author Tom Symington at Art Gallery Kimberley – Book Signing & Meet-and-Greet Event
We are looking forward to hosting a book signing and meet-and-greet event with local author Tom Symington this Saturday, February 15, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. You are warmly invited to stop by the gallery to meet the author, discover his deeply personal memoir “Not So Normal”, and enjoy an inspiring time surrounded by local art.
In “Not So Normal”, Tom shares his interesting coming-of-age journey, weaving together his experiences growing up in post-World War II Alberta with the broader evolution of gay rights in Canada. Through heartfelt storytelling, Tom explores themes of self-acceptance, resilience, and the ongoing fight for human rights, taking readers on a journey from Calgary to Sierra Leone, France, and beyond.
“‘Not So Normal’ is as much a celebration of selfhood as it is a call to action,” says Tom. “It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and the work that still needs to be done.”
With a background in education, translation, and community advocacy, Tom has lived and worked around the world. He now calls the East Kootenays home, where he remains actively involved in environmental conservation and human rights initiatives.

Following high school, as Tom entered university and became a teacher, he was forced to reconcile his sexual orientation with the prevailing social and legal environment in Alberta, Canada, and the world beyond. As decades passed, “femmy” merged with “gay,” “queer,” and “LGBTQ+ community” in a rallying movement and an enduring struggle towards pride and self-acceptance against the current of societal expectations and discriminatory legislation."

"Tom Symington grew up, attended university, and became a secondary school teacher in Alberta (Wild Rose Country). He went on to travel, volunteer, work, and study in Sierra Leone, Europe, the United States, and Québec, earning a Diplome d'études professionnelles (DEP) en céramique and becoming a translator after completing a Graduate Diploma in Translation at McGill University."
"Tom is an active member of the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society and a supporter of the growing Columbia Valley Community Foundation. As a former CUSO volunteer/teacher, he continues to support the organisation and its ideals, and as a former volunteer and board member with the AIDS Calgary Awareness Association, he supports an endowment fund at the Calgary Foundation: Equal in Dignity and Rights."
